* We do not use a features list like most trade papers - we do not optimistically line up a list of subjects and stick to it come what may. We don't think that is at all useful to us, suppliers, or the readers!
We are a news magazine, and as such, everything newsworthy is valid for inclusion in all our issues, all the time. This is, of course, the most useful approach for anyone who wants to promote a product or service - you don't want to be told 'we've just done that' or 'we're not doing that until next year'. With Coffee House, if whatever you have is newsworthy, then it's of interest to us... and, of course, this means that things like coffee blends and espresso machines are relevant every month.
However, people do constantly ask us to produce a features list. So we have done!
When using this list, please remember that we are the magazine which knows something about the beverage and cafe sector - we're the ones who actually make a cappuccino. So when we say we're writing about a subject, that means we are looking extremely closely at everything it involves for our trade, with a greater understanding than you will find from any other magazine.
But we don't pretend that we know everything. So, if anyone has an idea for something which readers would really like to see featured in Coffee House - just suggest it to us. You're very welcome to do so!
Please also remember that we write for many other magazines... whether your subject does or does not fit Coffee House, there's always a chance we can use it elsewhere, for our mutual benefit.

The OOH Live! show preview. This show runs on 9/10 November at Earl's Court. It is in many ways it is an interesting balance between the bakery and snack sector of the out-of-home market, and the beverage sector. As always, you can expect a particularly detailed and interesting preview from Coffee House.

What's interesting at the Hospitality Show 2009 This massive show runs from 19-21 January at the NEC. This show features a quite giant amount of ideas for the cafe operator and caterer - and we know perfectly well that most operators simply can't spare the time to go round such a show. So it's our job to bring the exhibitors' ideas to the operators. (This is a very important part of show publicity - never forget the people who have no intention of going to see your stand, but still need to know about your service!)
The State of the Trade - where we all are This is a very important feature, and we expect that it will draw great interest around the trade. What exactly are the coming trends in all the things which affect the proprietor of a cafe or coffee-house? What is happening in coffee - is the roaster-retailer sector really going to happen? What's going to happen in tea, soft drinks, and the smoothie and chocolate sectors? Why did so many suppliers take a fresh interest in chocolate and snacks last year - what's going to happen in 2009? What are the trends in cafe design for this year? You'll want to read this - and you'll want to be seen in it, too!
Fairtrade Fortnight This runs from 23rd February to 8th March. We are constantly amazed that the Fairtrade Foundation and the cafe industry never seem to get themselves in sync for this event... but everyone involved in ethical trading agrees that this is a legitimate boom time for the cafe operator. Get involved in a rightful cause, and the old cliche of 'win-win situation' can actually come true.

Smoothies and Juices We make no apology for being constantly amazed at the new ideas coming up with fruit-based drinks that can be sold through the cafe and coffee-house. The things that the manufacturers know about juices and fruit will amaze most of our readers - again, you need to be part of this.
Tea Right. Let's get this absolutely straight - nobody writes about tea for the cafe trade like we do! It is astonishing what variety there is to keep a cafe apart from its competitors in this hard-fought sector... do you know how many varieties of English Breakfast there are?! And a very interesting thing is that the major brands can at times be extremely bad at promoting themselves. Some of the major brand teas are actually pretty good - but that shows how tea producers and suppliers need to work at putting themselves forward. We give the opportunity.
Cafe Plus It looks like we are going to see the launch of the Cafe Plus show as part of the Convenience Retailing Show at the NEC in Birmingham, 1-3 March. You can expect a typically detailed Coffee House preview - but remember, if you're exhibiting, that you need Coffee House to take your message to all those people who can't attend!
World Barista Championship This event, in which the British and Irish have done so well recently, is held in Atlanta on 16-19 April. The interest for the British cafe trade is - how can this inspire our everyday high-street cafe workers?

Caffe Culture Well, this is the big one. We shall be previewing the show which has taken its place as the leading exhibition for the cafe trade. This is on 20-21 May at Olympia, and for exhibitors, Coffee House magazine has always consistently produced the most detailed and interesting preview to this show. Remember - the show does draw several thousand potential customers... but there are thousands more who cannot attend, for the best of reasons, and we must take exhibitors' data to these people as well. Only Coffee House thinks like this!
SCAE Championships, Cologne Not just for the geek and the nerd, the whole point of these championships is (for us, anyway) to find practical inspiration for the everyday coffee-shop proprietor.

Practical cafe design Please do not be led astray by thinking simply of chair designs... the importance of design in the modern cafe is a very practical thing, as we have illustrated recently in our reports of the latest scalding accidents. Practical cafe design affects every aspect of how a coffee-house works... we shall be looking for advice and guidance from the top experts, as well as showing the latest ideas in furniture and planning services.
Snacks, biscuits and cafe food There was a fascinating explosion in interest in the snack market in 2008. Not only did several new brands crop up, but there were some very interesting fights between the existing brands, as well! It is no accident that one of the very top distributors to the British cafe trade designed their exhibition stand to show just how snacks and cafe food could be shown off to maximum potential at the point of sale. This is a big one.

Flavours The last year has seen a surprising development in the use of flavoured syrups in coffee, and indeed in the arrival of the new brands offering them. It is essential to look at this sector regularly, and it is vital for suppliers to refresh the trade's awareness of what is on offer.
Disposable Cups and takeaway packaging Our last feature on takeaway cups was so far ahead of all the other trade press in sheer detail and usefulness that we have decided to extend it this year to cover all kinds of takeaway packaging relevant to the cafe trade.
Great Taste awards The interesting thing about these awards is not the number of tea and coffee companies who win recognition, but the new product ideas that come up - this is what we want to highlight in front of the trade.

Full page – £750 (186mm wide x 254mm deep – no bleed) Half page, vertical or horizontal – £600 (186mm wide x 126mm deep, or 254 deep x 90mm wide) Quarter page in any format - £400 (90mm wide x 126mm deep; 186mm wide x 63mm; 43mm x 254mm deep)

Other ideas: Inserts: £400 per insertion. There is no additional charge for postage if an insert weighs no more than 10gms, and/or does not push us into the next postage band; any excess postage will be charged at cost. If more than one insert is included in an issue, the excess postage will be split between the advertisers. Back/address page: A size of approximately A5 is booked for 12 months – when available the cost is £325. Website: We have always made slots available at the top of the home page, but n late 2008 we began to develop advertising slots across other pages. These are remarkably economical, and usually of petty-cash size... but check with us to see what can be done, please. Earpieces: on an A4 news-format sheet, the earpiece size each side is about 30mm x 20mm. Best used in conjunction with an inside appearance. Product slots: we do not charge for ‘colour separations’. This is a fraud. However, we do make available a small ad slot of a picture and 70 words, for £50. Minimum size is 59mm x 90mm… but if there’s room, we often expand them! Competitions: small charge, and the supplier gives the prize. These are always by arrangement and mutual planning, and we ask the advertiser to come in on the promotion of the contest.
